The couple for whom we designed this house had very conservative parents whose ideas were at odds with theirs. In many ways it was typical of a problem we are confronted with when we design residences, where tradition and modernity clash within one family and diverse ideas need to be accommodated within the framework of one building
Traditional elements assumed a somewhat different form in the way they were used. A sloping roof was cleaved and cast at different levels to create a skylight in between. A courtyard was created in the middle of the house but it was roofed over to protect from the elements. It was a balancing act where both opposing ideologies were accommodated without compromising on the aesthetics or functionality.
