Utopia is a gated community in Bangalore with many trees and generous greenery.  In this setting, it was natural to design a house that was rustic and connected to the landscape.  Walls in terracotta block punctured by balconies and verandahs helped make that happen.  From every point within the house, one saw glimpses of trees, and the soaring triple height volume in the centre of the house gave it a light, airy and spacious feel.  Metal jalis with leaf patterns mounted outside the fenestration created ever changing shadow patterns through the day as the sun moved from east to west.  The void also helped link every level to the centre so that you felt connected even as you moved between the rooms or to different floors.
